In the closing stage of the 2007 SUPER GT series, a new qualifying format was implemented in the seventh round held at Twinring Motegi. It was the so-called "Knock Out System" that has been adopted in Formula One. The session was divided into three sections and the slower cars were eliminated at the end of each section. As competitors were allowed to use only one set of tires throughout those three sections, the performance of tires and the drivers' tire management abilities were the keys for good results.

Although the practice session on Friday morning was cancelled due to a typhoon, the track was dry that afternoon. To make up for the cancellation of the morning session, the practice in the afternoon was extended, but some teams couldn't go through their planned programs for Friday.

On Saturday, ECLIPSE ADVAN SC430 performed well in the qualifying session and marked the third fastest time in the first fifteen minute section. And then the car survived until the final section and took the seventh grid.

In the GT300 class, YUNKER-POWER TAISAN PORSCHE was in good shape. The car was fastest in the first section and registered an even faster time in the final section, but it was beaten by the eventual pole sitter by only a 0.036 sec. gap and had to settle for the second grid of the GT300 class.

The sky cleared up on Sunday. The temperature went beyond 30℃ and the surface temperature also climbed to nearly 45℃ even though it was September according to the calendar. The race started in the lingering summer heat.

Immediately after the start, there was an accident in the lead group but the starting driver of ECLIPSE ADVAN SC430, Manabu Orido, steered clear of involvement in it and moved up to fourth at the end of the opening lap. Afterwards, the car kept running in the upper ranks and finished in eighth to earn some valuable points despite a slight slow down in the closing phase.

WOODONE ADVAN Clarion Z had to settle for a lower rank in the qualifying session but its race pace was actually quite good. Joao Paulo De Oliveira drove the first half of the race and moved up to second when he came in to the pit on Lap 31 after a long stint. Seiji Ara took over the car and resumed the race in tenth. While his rivals were slowing down in the closing stage, he kept pushing hard and finished in fifth, resulted in a top ten slot in the drivers' championship.

YUNKER-POWER TAISAN PORSCHE outshone their rivals in the GT300 class and was unchallenged after taking the lead position at the start from the second grid. In the early part of the race, Nobuteru Taniguchi controlled his pace to keep his position while closely watching his followers. However, he then started to push hard and built up a significant margin before he pitted in and changed to Dominik Farnbacher at around the halfway point of the race. Farnbacher went back to the track in fourth but, when the others made their routine stops, he was in the top slot again. Eventually, he took the checkered flag with more than a 40 sec. gap. WILLCOM ADVAN VEMAC408R finished in second after a long battle for the position and this completed a one-two finish by ADVAN users.

Privee KENZO Asset Shiden had to carry the maximum weight handicap of 80kg for this race, but after strenuous efforts by its drivers, the car finished in sixth and added some more points. This result put the team on the top slot of the drivers' championship of GT300 class in addition to the same position in the teams championship.
Driver's Voice
Nobuteru Taniguchi
[the winner of the GT300 class]
"I couldn't be happier. Thanks to some accidents in the following groups, we built a good margin and won the race.
"Because we couldn't test the tires sufficiently due to the cancellation of the Friday's morning session, I drove defensively so as not to use the tires too much in the early part of the race. Then, in the second half of my stint, I thought that the tires would be O.K. and pushed hard and they were very consistent in performance until the end of my stint. It's just perfect.
"After the driver change to Dominik, we didn't worry about tires or his lap times at all. Our only concern was unexpected mechanical trouble which has hit us in recent races.
"This was our team's 26th win that coincided with our car number and the team owner, Mr.Chiba, was really happy with this win, which was my pleasure indeed.
"The venue of the final round, Fuji, has a long home stretch which inherently suits Porsches. We will try to get another win in the final round."
Driver's Voice
Hiroki Katoh
  [sixth in the GT300 class]
"As we had an 80kg weight handicap, I thought that we would have to drive with much patience from the beginning of this weekend. Therefore, our target was to finish the race without making any mistakes and add as many points as possible.
"The tires we used in this race had the same level of traction as the previous ones and the drop off of the grip level was relatively small, so we could keep a good race pace until the end. As they did in Suzuka, the tires helped us very much.
"Because of the weight handicap, our car will still be heavier than the others. This means that the next race won't be any easier for us, but we will make every effort to get as many points as possible and keep our eyes on the championship title which has been our target since the beginning of the season."
ENGINEER'S VOICE
Atsushi Shimada
"The race was held in hot conditions again, but our two GT500 cars and the most of our customers in the GT300 class chose the softer compound.
"As ECLIPSE ADVAN SC430 performed well in the last race at Suzuka, we brought a normally developed version for the car. On the other hand, we made some modification on the construction of tires for WOODONE ADVAN Clarion Z.
"To put it specifically, our target was to improve the cornering power. Although Motegi is renowned as one of the typical 'stop & go' circuits, it still has some corners and we can't ignore the cornering performance of tires. Consequently, the performance in the race was reasonably good.
"The number of tires that every competitor could use in the 'Knock Out' system qualifying was limited to only one set. Since it was allowed to cool down the tires with cold water between each section, we didn't need any special adaptation this time (in developing the tires). But if such cooling down is banned, we will have to modify the tire in a more conservative direction.
"As for the remaining two races of the series, our advantage in the wear rate will help us in the next race at Autopolis, because the wear rate is usually higher due to the higher load on tires there.
"Then we will revisit Fuji. We aimed at winning in the last race at Fuji in May and we are obviously looking to do it again. We will try to produce the better tires with a view to winning both of the remaining two races."
