As the weather in Japan mainland is getting colder day by day, especially in the early morning and sunset hours, the final round of 2010 Super GT series was held at Twinring Motegi, Motegi town, Tochigi prefecture, on October 23 and 24. Although the championship had eight rounds on its calendar, the seventh round at Fuji had to be cancelled in the aftermath of a typhoon. As a result, many teams in both GT500 and GT300 classes still had chances to win the title when they headed for Motegi for this final round.

The official qualifying session was run on the knock-out system format. J.P. de Oliveira drove HIS ADVAN Kondo GT-R (car no.24) in Section 1 (S1) and handed the car to his teammate Hironobu Yasuda for S2. They performed well enough to proceed to S3 in which the grids for top seven cars were to be decided, as they were the fastest GT-R drivers in both sections and Yasuda's time in S2 was the new course record.

The team chose the harder compound, the medium soft, for S3 because the rule dictates that the top seven cars must start the race with the tires they used in S3. But Oliveira soon realized that the medium soft tires didn't suit to the course conditions and averted to make a serious attack to save the tires for Sunday's race, which resulted in finishing the session in the last place, seventh.

In the GT300 class, Tomica Z (car no.3) survived S1 and S2 with ease as its times around 1'54"9 were really fast and then Masataka Yanagida pushed it to the limit in S3 to register a remarkable lap time, 1'54"186, which was good enough to put the car on the pole position. Since Hoshino/Yanagida pair was fourth in the point standings and 11 points behind the championship leader before heading to Motegi, they needed to finish the race better than second to keep their title hope alive. So starting from the pole position meant clearing the first hurdle for them to make it.

The race started at 2 p.m. on Sunday. JP was at the wheel of HIS ADVAN Kondo GT-R for the first stint as usual but completed the opening lap in seventh where he started without making any progress and remained in the same position during the early stage.

But, on Lap 8, he was hit from behind by another car and forced to go off the track, which sent him down to tenth. Pushing hard to recover with a very good pace which was comparable with that of race leaders, he stayed out longer than most of his opponents and moved up through the positions, as the cars in front of his made their pit stops. And, on Lap 28 of 53 lap race, Oliveira finally became the race leader.

After completing Lap 35, the Brazilian came back to the pit to change to Yasuda. The team opted for not changing the tires and sent the Japanese back to the track after refueling only. But it took more time than it should to change driver and fuel the car, so Yasuda was in sixth when he resumed racing and completed the lap in seventh.

He eventually fell down to tenth, as he struggled to find out the pace early in his stint, and remained in the place until the finish even though he was able to drive around 1'50" or 1'51 pace later. As a result, the team added one point to their tally and finished the championship in tenth.

As for the GT300 class, the pole sitting Tomica Z made a near-perfect pole-to-win, leading throughout the race except for a few laps after the pit stop. The 20 points they earned by their first victory of the season was more than enough to secure the championship because the leader after the last round failed to get any point in this race. The ending of the season couldn't be better for them.

The starting driver of Tomica Z, Kazuki Hoshino, made a good getaway and led the opening lap, followed by Yuhi Sekiguchi in JLOC Lamborghini RG-3 (car no.86) which started from the third grid. But the leader gradually pulled away from Sekiguchi and the other cars queued up behind the Lamborghini but weren't able to overtake it. Consequently, the gap between Hoshino and Sekiguchi continued to grow.

Some of the drivers in the group led by Sekiguchi didn't want to stick in the crowded pack and moved the scheduled pit stop forward. On the other hand, Hoshino steadily led the race and came into the pit on Lap 29 as scheduled. Then Yanagida resumed racing in front of the opponents who had already made their mandatory pit stops and duly completed his stint in even faster pace. Thus, Tomika Z totally dominated the race to grab their first win of the season and the come-from-behind championship title.

Meanwhile, after giving up the second place to Apple K-One Shiden (car no.2), JLOC Lamborghini RG-3 was involved in a close battle with a Ferrari (car no.11). While the Ferrari made the pit stop earlier, Sekiguchi drove for a much longer stint and came back to the pit as late as at the end of Lap 30, well beyond the halfway point. On top of this, the team changed only two front tires at the stop to save time and Koji Yamanishi answered to the team's effort with a splendid drive to hold up the Ferrari behind him. The dog fight continued until the checkered flag fell but Yamanishi ultimately managed to keep the third place.

As a result, the season concluding podium of GT300 class was dominated three ADVAN equipped cars, headed by the new champion, Hoshino/Yanagida pair, which was another proof of versatile performance of ADVAN racing tires.
Driver's Voice
Kazuki Hoshino
[Result : Winner in the GT300 class]
"Mah (Masataka, his teammate) got the pole position in the qualifying session by his 'supernatural' drive. It was a perfect gift for me, as I was going to be the starting driver. So, in return, I tried to extend as much margin as possible (before handing the car to him).
"I was fully concentrating from the start and pushed hard every lap, every corner but at the same time I tried to save tires because we might have to go with that set of tires until the finish when the situation asked for it. I was happy I could manage to give him some margin at the end of my stint.
"I was nearly in tears when we got to the finish, as I recalled things that had happened through this year."

Masataka Yanagida
[Result : Winner in the GT300 class]
"Honestly, I never expected to get the pole position because our Fairlady Z normally isn't the fastest car on the track like Motegi. But the car and tires were really good and everything went great to make this pole position possible. Of course, the team did a great job for this final round.
"We originally planned not to join the tire testing at Motegi in early October. But Mr. Hasemi, our team manager, managed to raise money somehow and we were allowed to take part in the important test day.
"And YOKOHAMA let us try many different types of tires in the testing, which was so valuable experience for choosing tires for this race and setting up the car.
"So I am happy with this result as a product of such preparation work."
Engineer's Voice
Jun Arakawa
"Because we had had a pre-event testing, we could have the tires not only with the most suitable compounds for Motegi in this time of year but some fine tuning to their constructions. The air and surface temperatures were well within our expectation at the time of the testing, so we were confident that those tires were most appropriate for the conditions.
"We had two types of compounds, the soft and medium soft, for GT500 and chose the soft for S1 and S2 of the knock out qualifying session but switched the medium soft for S3, considering that we had to start the race with that set of tires (which were used in S3). As JP (de Oliveira) thought it would be wise to save the tires for the race and didn't make a full attack, the time itself in S3 was mediocre but the real performance wasn't too bad as it looked.
"In the race, we had lost a rhythm when the car was hit from behind by the other car. While we opted for not changing tires at the pit stop, we couldn't save much time probably because it took a bit longer than usual to change driver and refuel. And tires themselves were marginal to endure the whole race distance under these conditions.
"As for the GT300 class, Tomica Z scored a pole-to-win and secured the championship title by reversing the point deficit. With our user teams dominated the podium, it was the best possible conclusion of a season. I would say the crew of Tomica Z made most of the pre-event testing. Two types of compounds were available, the soft and super soft, but most of teams chose the super soft which displayed consistent performance even in a long stint.
"Now the regular season ended but we will have a special round, the Fuji Sprint Cup race, so we will continue our effort to make one final push."
