For this special stage round, the GT Association defined the different performance compensation rule set from the regular season races. By applying this, as for the GT300 class, the cars that had been strong in the mid-season, such as Porsche 911 GT3R or Aston Martin V12 Vantage, now had to carry additional 50kg handicap weight, while many of the JAF GT cars were allowed to increase the diameter of their intake air restrictors. Because of this, many expected a totally different picture this time from the past two regular season races here, even if the unique characteristics of Fuji Speedway had often given a certain advantage to specific car models.

Despite the special rules, however, the FIA GT3 cars still seemed to be faster in the qualifying session. Among the Yokohama shoed cars, MonePa Lamborghini GT3 secured the second grid for both races by the hands of Takayuki Aoki and Manabu Orido, while the pole positions were snatched by Hankook Porsche. Naoki Yokomizo and Kyosuke Mineo in Endless Taisan 911 claimed the fourth grid for each. Tatsuya Kataoka in GSR Hatsune Miku BMW sat on the fifth grid for Race 1 and Yuhi Sekiguchi in S Road NDDP GT-R took the same place for Race 2.

The weather on Friday was almost perfect for the qualifying session which every driver tried to make an all-out attack just for a single lap. But then rain came on Saturday, so Race 1 had to be run under the very wet and cold conditions. The air/sureface temperatures stayed around only 10 degrees Celsius which was by far the lowest of this year's Super GT races.

Soon after the start, Yokomizo in Endless Taisan 911 gained a position and completed the first lap in third. On the other hand, Aoki's MonePa Lamborghini looked to be struggling and lost a lot of ground during the opening lap. Yokomizo, too, was barely able to keep the car on the track because of the bad conditions and started to fall back after Lap 6.

In contrast, S Road NDDP GT-R with Chiyo at the wheel made a good showing, making the most of good traction of his all-wheel drive Nissan which shone on the wet track. Although he went off the track at Prius Corner on the opening lap because he was hit by someone from behind, he quickly recovered from it from eighth place and came up to third on Lap 7.

But Chiyo's position wasn't so secure, as ARTA Garaiya was rapidly closing from behind. With the larger air restrictor than that of the regular season, the JAF GT spec Garaiya now had comparable speed on the straight lines to Chiyo's FIA GT3 Nissan and was pushing him hard on almost every corner.

Fully utilizing GT-R's ABS and the electronic traction control system, Chiyo did everything he could to defend the position but, finally, he was nearly losing control of his car at the last corner of the last lap, allowing Garaiya to dive into the inside and pass him. Kataoka in GSR Hatsune Miku BMW finished the race in fifth and Haruki Kurosawa in Green Tec & Leon SLS followed him in sixth.

The fine weather came back on Sunday, the day for Race 2. The air and surface temperatures were still quite low - both at 12 degrees - but the track was completely dry when the race was about to start.

Sekiguchi in S Road NDDP GT-R made the best start of all from the fifth grid and was going into the first corner keeping the inside on the approach. But it resulted in becoming abreast with Orido's MonePa Lamborghini and Mugen CR-Z GT and the three cars made contact each other. Consequently, they all lost positions in the aftermath of the tangling and the two cars that were closely behind them, Endless Taisan 911 and Evangelion Apple Shiden with Mineo and Hiroki Kato at the wheels, were also involved in the incident.

Mineo and Kato managed to keep going and now they had Yoshimoto in Triple A Vantage GT3, who started the race from the sixth grid, joining in the pack. But Mineo's Porsche had considerable damage on the left rear of the car because of the first corner incident and he couldn't resist Yoshimoto's overtaking move at ADVAN Corner on the same lap. Soon after that, the orange disc flag that called for the pit stop for repair was given to the damaged Porsche, which effectively put an end to Mineo's race.

At the front, Hankook Porsche looked to be escaping from the rest of the field comfortably. However, from Lap 4 and on, Yoshimoto became faster in lap times than the race leader, so the gap between them gradually shrunk. On Lap 8 of 22 lap race, the Aston Martin driver made a successful move at ADVAN Corner again and became the new race leader. Kato also got ahead of the Porsche at the 100R corner on the next lap to move up to second.

The decreasing pace of Hankook Porsche resulted in a "long train" of as many as seven cars at a time, headed by the Porsche still running in third. The first driver to get ahead of the que was Nobuteru Taniguchi in GSR Hatsune Miku BMW and then Hironori Takeuchi in Green Tec & Leon SLS followed his path, although the latter was subsequently passed by recovering Orido on Lap 15.

In the closing phase of the race, the spectators' eyes were glued to the hotly fought battle between Yoshimoto and Kato. Ironically, the two drivers had driven the Shiden as the teammates in the past... Meanwhile, Taniguchi running in third suddenly came in the pit with four laps to go and was forced to retire due to a broken wheel hub on the left rear of his car.

The breathtaking fight for the lead position continued until the end of the race but Yoshimoto narrowly remained in the position and received the checkered flag first. As the A Speed team he drove for was to be disbanded at the end of this season, he could set the crown on the team with the victory in their last race.

This was also the final appearance of the Shiden, which Kato had been driving for years, because of the regulation change from the next year. "I didn't win but I am happy rather than disappointing," he said, relishing his second place finish. Orido's MonePa Lamborghini GT3 finished in third, followed by Takeuchi's Green Tec & Leon SLS. Morio Nitta in Apr Hasepro Prius GT made a great recovery from 17th, after losing a lot of ground at the start, and eventually ended the race in fifth.

Driver's Voice
Katsumasa Chiyo
 [Result : 4th. in the Race 1]
"I was confident in the wet race but I was hit from behind on the opening lap and spun at Prius Corner. That delay cost me a lot in the end.
"After that, my pace was good for a while and it didn' take long to move up to third. But then my pace started to go down and I found Garaiya was closing to me. For the last two laps, I had a very hard time and tried to defend my position somehow. And the last corner of the last lap, I actually steered to close the door but the front end just went wide, so I gave him a space to come in to the inside.
"It's frustrating but I learned a lot today. I want to be a better driver next year and get better results."

Hiroki Yoshimoto
[Result : Winner in the Race 2]
"I anticipated losing some positions at the start because my Aston Martin's first gear ratio is longer than that of other cars. And I did lose some position but it might be rather lucky. Because there was an accident ahead of me and, if I had made a good start, I could have been involved in it.
"Soon after that, I overtook the 911 (Endless Taisan 911) and then I had the battle with Masami-san (Kageyama in Hankook Porsche). But I could pass him, too, because he seemed to be struggling badly. Then Shiden was very fast, as Kato-san was pushing very hard to get a good result for the car's last race, so I had to keep pushing every lap as if it was a qualifying lap. It wasn't a long race but I felt so tired after the finish.
"Had Kato-san stayed ahead of me from the beginning, it would have been very difficult to pass him. So I think the main reason for my victory was the place where I was at the start of the race.
"I had a good time with the A speed team and it is a pity the team is going out. But still it was good to be able to end the season in this way, winning the last race for the team."

"D'station ADVAN GT-R was the fastest among the GT-Rs in the GT500 class qualifying. We made the super soft compound available for the qualifying session and Hironobu Yasuda achieved a good result with them. But Seiji Ara couldn't warm up the tire properly for his qualifying lap, because there was a slower car ahead of him and he had to keep a certain distance to it. That cost him a few tenth and he had to settle for 14th. It was frustrating because the car's handling balance and the tire performance seemed to be good.

"Race 1 was hit by heavy rain and we chose the super soft wet tires from the two types we had, the soft and the super soft. But they didn't work well in the condition that the water on the track was very cold, which was an issue to be solved for us. Because of the heavy rain, the race had to be cut short.

"Race 2 was run on the dry track. While the surface temperature was lower than anticipated, D'station ADVAN GT-R moved up to the position one step shy of the podium finish at a time, after a lot of interesting battles. So I think we could show the performance of our tires in this race.

"In Race 2 of the GT300 class, Triple A Vantage GT3 performed very well and earned the victory. It was a blow for us that the leading Yokohama equipped cars tangled each other soon after the start but we were happy to see our users dominated the podium in the end. Particularly, it was very good to see Shiden finished its final race in second by Kato's tremendous effort.

"In the first half of the season, our development work (for the GT500 class) hardly led to the expected results but, in the second half, the results were gradually getting better. Having said that, this race was a difficult one due to the unexpected low temperatures but we can still learn something from such a tough experience for the future development work. While finishing in third was our best result this year, we would like to see our drivers getting on the center of the podium, not for only once but for several times, hopefully. We will push our tire development ahead to make it into a reality"
